Introduction
In establishing a Legal Information Archive, a comprehensive, cross-referenced legal information database, the Library of the Supreme Court of Korea has been compiling cases, regulations and laws, statutes and other related legal materials since 1996. This Legal Information Archive, to be made available through the digital library currently under construction, will facilitate access to legal materials for internal users as well as the general public. The Supreme Court Library is committed to providing a quality legal information service, and will continue to expand information resources and enhance the usability and accessibility of its information systems.

Current Project

Full-text (publications and cases ) Database Project
  Project Description

Since 1996, we have been populating our "Legal Information System" database with digital archives of court decisions, legal publications - for which the permission to reproduce has been granted - and judicial publications. In 2002, we migrated to the new standard format recommended for government agencies by converting all existing data in text format to XML format. We intend to adopt XML format for all future entries - including publications, and case data - into the LawWorld (Legal Information Databases) and the Bubgoul ( LX·DVD ) database.

Project for Bubgoul( LX·DVD ) Program Development
  Project Description

Bubgoul LX is a database program developed independently by the Supreme Court in 1997 for the purpose of providing practical legal information to legal professionals, scholars, and members of the general public who, because of individual limitations , would otherwise not have access to the LawWorld(Legal Information Databases) constructed by the Judicial Branch.

In accordance with the new long-term development plan and commensurate with construction of the Digital Library, the Supreme Court Library has converted text format data into XML format, upgraded the LawWorld(Legal Information Databases) into a web-based system in 2002, and developed an advanced and more convenient version of Bubgoul DVD that enables XML format data to be viewed in a personal PC environment.

Acquiring permission from the copyright owners (judicial officers, prosecutors, attorneys-at-law, professors etc.) of domestic publications for use in the LawWorld Legal Information Databases) and providing information regarding original works of a judicial nature using Bubgoul( LX·DVD ) is an ongoing process.

Because users are able to have access to, search and utilize a database of legal publications and the information through their own PC, physical trips to the library become unnecessary.

Conversion of Actual Names of Related People into Pseudonyms in Judicial Decisions
  Project Description

Using real names in judicial decisions, Bubgoul LX, and other information that are provided to external users poses infringement on privacy and danger of defamation of the persons involved. To prevent such occurrences and to protect the persons involved, the work of conversion of real names into fictitious names have been underway. (For judicial decisions given since 1996, selected conversion into fictitious names have been done before providing the information through Integrated Legal Information System of the Supreme Court website.)
